PEACE DALE, RI – Local Girl Scout Nava Shear has officially launched a new community project, the “Historic Peace Dale Geocache Series,” designed to combine outdoor adventure with local education. This initiative, completed as part of the requirements for the Girl Scout Silver Award—the second-highest honor in Girl Scouting—aims to connect residents and visitors with the rich 300-year history of Peace Dale.

The project features a series of seven geocaches hidden throughout Tri-Pond Park in Peace Dale, RI. Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting activity that uses GPS-enabled devices to find hidden containers. Each cache in this series is strategically placed to educate visitors about the settlement and development of Peace Dale, turning a standard hike into an interactive historical tour.
Nava, a long time resident of Peace Dale, was inspired to create the series after noticing a lack of historical education for younger students in the community. “I attended Peace Dale Elementary and noticed that kids are taught very little about the history of the town where they live,” said Shear. “I wanted to create something that would teach people about the amazing history of our town in a fun, engaging way.”
The “Historic Peace Dale” series is specifically designed with families in mind. The caches are large and hidden to be beginner-friendly, making the activity an ideal outing for families with children. Tri-Pond Park was selected as the project site for its close proximity to Peace Dale, family-oriented trails, and Asa Pond Nature Center, which hosts activities for children year round.

"Geocaching is a fantastic way to stretch your legs and test your brain," added Shear. "With this series, I hope to inspire others to take an interest in the history right in their own backyard."
The series is now open to the public. To participate, geocachers can create a free account on geocaching.com and search for "Historic Peace Dale" to begin their adventure.
