Introducing "Ask Dr. Kerri"! đź’¬ Have a health question you've been wondering about but haven't known who to ask? Dr. Kerri Sinapi of Ocean State Wellness is here to help. With more than 20 years of experience in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine, and as a Certified Menopause Society Provider, Dr. Kerri is answering your questions in plain, friendly language. Each issue, she'll tackle one reader question, from hormones and sleep to energy, weight, and everything in between. Let's dive into our very first one!
Question: "I'm in my 40s, and lately my sleep, mood, and energy just feel off. How do I know if hormones are part of the picture?"
If you’re noticing that your sleep, mood, or energy feel off, it’s completely valid to wonder whether hormones are involved. I hear this question every single day in the clinic, and it’s an important one to ask.
Hormonal changes in your 40s (and 50s) often show up gradually and can easily be mistaken for stress, a busy life, or just “getting older.” But hormones regulate sleep, energy, mood, metabolism, temperature, and cognition, so when they shift, you may notice changes in several areas at once.
Signs hormones may be contributing
You might experience:
- Night sweats or temperature swings
- Brain fog or trouble concentrating
- Difficulty falling or staying asleep
- Irritability, anxiety, or emotional sensitivity
- Low energy or “wired‑but‑tired” fatigue
- Feeling “not like yourself”
These symptoms are especially meaningful when they’re new, persistent, or happening together.
A key truth I want every woman to know
Hormonal fatigue is a pattern — not a personality flaw, not a lack of effort, and not something you imagined.
It’s physiologic, predictable, and extremely common during perimenopause.
You don’t have to guess
The most effective way to understand what’s happening is a conversation with a qualified provider. Together, we look at your health history, symptoms, lab work and goals to determine whether hormones are part of the picture and what your options may be.
Good to know
- Symptoms vary widely from person to person
- Fatigue and mood changes can have multiple causes — hormones are just one piece (that's why we perform a comprehensive lab panel)
- Your health history and goals matter in any plan
- You don’t have to figure this out alone
If you’re ready to talk through what you’re experiencing, I’m here — and the team at Ocean State Wellness is ready to help.
